Description
Handmade in the Zapotec village of San Martin, Oaxaca, these beautifully painted wooden hearts reflect the cultural fusion of the artists. Highly detailed with a semi gloss finish, each of these gorgeously carved hearts is adorned with delicate "grecas" like those found at the Zapotec palace of Mitla. The grecas, a series of repeating geometric designs, symbolize pre-Columbian gods like Quetzalcóatl, Tláloc or Cosijo, essential elements like the sun, rain or lightning, and elements of humanity like fertility or knowledge. They also symbolize universal consciousness, and as such, represent the bond between human existence and the divine in pre-Columbian Mexico. It is the shape of the sacred heart, in turn, with it's crown and flames, that demonstrates the fusion of indigenous and Catholic beliefs. Please Choose an Item
